Just outside of Troy, the town of Poestenkill has been grappling with contaminated water supplies since PFAS were found at Algonquin Middle School in 2021. UWCP has been working on the ground with Poestenkillians on diligent reporting, resident education, and issue advocacy to address the threat to drinking water in the rural Upstate town. PFAS – per and polyfluoroalkyl substances – are also known as “forever chemicals” due to their lingering properties in blood and concerning health risks.

HOW TO USE THE MAP
MAY 2023 UPDATE: The surface water and groundwater sampling data from the April 2023 update from DEC is now available on the interactive map. An updated user tutorial can be watched on the left.
Since PFOA was first discovered at Algonquin Middle School in 2021, DEC and the Town of Poestenkill have conducted water sampling efforts at potential contamination sources around town. Sampling data on PFOA, PFOS, and 1,4-dioxane are publicly available and compiled into the map. This application puts all of that data into an interactive map that is easy to use. Locations that have been investigated include the waste management transfer station, Saint Gobain, Poestenkill landfill, and Dynamic Systems, Inc. Water testing data for Algonquin Middle, Averill Park High School, and West Sand Lake Elementary is also available.
